A Keloid is an unsightly itchy scar that can be raised or becomes a big mass. This problem is more common in people with dark skin and happens most of the time in young people following earlobes piercing or skin cuts over shoulders and chest area. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition which can cause serious disfigurement.
When the keloid scar is raised, a steroid injection into the scar can make it flatter and relieve the itchiness. However, bigger keloids need to be removed.
Removal is by Surgical Excision. A local anaesthetic injection that stings for few seconds will be used to numb the area and the procedure will then be pain free. An incision on the skin is made and the keloid is excised. The scar size is usually the same size as the keloid.
The wound is then closed with sutures and covered with a dressing. The scar fades away most of the time after two years.
The aftercare will be all explained to you on the day of surgery. Usually the patient will return for removal of sutures 7-10 days after surgery.
Most of the cases are complications free, however, the risk of Recurrence is high. Therefore, we advise patients to come back few weeks after surgery for steroid injection which tends to reduce the risk of recurrence.
